1. They are instantly recognizable due to their elongated bodies and short legs. Often called “sausage dogs” or “wiener dogs”. Children recognize them when you are walking them, frequently call out “mum there’s a sausage dog!”
2. Bred in Germany to hunt badgers originally. “Dachs” means badger and “Hund” means dog, their long body made it easy for burrowing. They are the national dog of Germany.
3. Dachshunds come in 3 different coat types and 3 different sizes. Long hair, short hair and wire hair, with standard, mini and rabbit sizes. Each with their own personality traits.
4. They have a confident and spunky personality, often described as ”small dog syndrome” a “big dog in a little dog body”, they are not afraid to take on anyone especially when protecting their home and family.
5. Dachshunds were a favorite of Queen Victoria, she had a few in her Royal kennel, President Roosevelt also had a dachshund named Fala.
6. Dachshunds have long backs and can have issues with their vertebrae. Vigilance in looking after their backs is key to a long life.
7. Dachshunds are known to be stubborn, they need training from a very young age, and their unwavering loyalty outweighs their stubbornness.
8. Dachshunds love to dig, they were bred for it, and it’s in their history. Redirect them to a special spot in the yard or a sandbox! As a puppy especially they love to dig. Mine grew out of it as they got older.
9. Dachshunds hate the wet grass, when it’s raining/snowing they will not go outside for toileting, I have a gazebo in my yard for rainy days!!
10. Dachshunds are very loyal to their family and often develop a close attachment to one family member. They love cuddles and kisses and it’s very easy to spoil them!!
